Following a recent review from the Environmental Agency new guidance and legislation was introduced on 19th December 2022 around the disposal of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS.) With immediate effect it is against the law to send any products containing POPS to a landfill or incinerate yourself.
What are POPS
POPS sometimes referred to as forever chemicals are a list of poisonous chemical substances that do not break down in the environment which are toxic. Their slow breakdown means they release toxins into the food chain which is a danger to human health.
What items contain POPS
There are two main areas you are likely to find POPS: in upholstered domestic and commercial furniture and some waste electrical equipment.
Upholstered furniture items include:
- sofa beds
- kitchen and dining room chairs
- stools and foot stools
- home office chairs
- bean bags, floor and sofa cushions
This includes any part made of or containing leather, synthetic leather, other fabric, or foam.
Please note furniture that is not upholstered such as wooden chairs with no textiles or foam, deckchairs, mattresses, curtains, blinds and beds are unlikely to contain POPS. Therefore, are not covered by the new guidance.
Waste electrical items include:
- printed circuit boards
- plastic casings, cables and other components
- insulation foam
- cooling agents
- flame retardants
- activated glass and screen phosphors
- cathode ray tubes
