Hiring a skip is the fastest way to clear out a house or manage a building site, but you can’t just throw in everything. To avoid an expensive headache and ensure your waste is handled legally, it’s vital to know which items are strictly prohibited.
Putting restricted items in your skip can lead to extra charges, or worse, the driver may refuse to collect the skip until the items are removed.
Common Prohibited Items
Most skips are designed for “general waste”—things like wood, metal, plastic, and garden debris. However, the following items require specialist disposal and cannot go in a standard skip:
- Upholstered furniture and POPs waste: Due to regulations around Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), you cannot put most soft furnishings that contain foam or upholstery in a skip. This includes sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, kitchen and dining chairs, stools and footstools, home office chairs, futons, bean bags, and floor or sofa cushions. Anything that is part or fully made of leather, synthetic leather, fabric or foam is treated as POPs waste. These must be kept separate from general waste for specialist disposal Hazardous Materials: This includes asbestos, gas cylinders, batteries, and fuel.
- Electrical Equipment (WEEE): Fridges, freezers, televisions, and microwaves must be recycled via specific routes.
- Liquids: Paint, oil, solvents, and chemical cleaners.
- Tyres: These are incredibly difficult to process and are not accepted at standard landfills.
- Medical Waste: Any clinical waste or syringes pose a significant safety risk to our team.
- Mattresses & Plasterboard: While sometimes accepted, these often require prior notice or a dedicated skip due to specific recycling regulations.
If you have any POPs items (such as a sofa or armchair), speak to us first so we can arrange the correct collection route and avoid contaminating the rest of your skip load.
Why Are These Restricted?
It isn’t just about being difficult. These rules are in place for two main reasons: Safety and Sustainability. Many prohibited items contain chemicals that can leak and contaminate otherwise recyclable materials. In the case of POPs, the foam and textiles in upholstered seating can contain long‑lasting pollutants that must be incinerated and cannot go to landfill or regular recycling. Others, like gas canisters, can explode when processed at a waste transfer station. By keeping these out of your skip, you help us maintain a high recycling rate and keep our staff safe
Avoid the Fines
If you are unsure about a specific item, the best rule of thumb is: check before you skip it. It is much cheaper to arrange a specialist collection for a restricted item than it is to pay a contamination fee for an entire 8-yard skip.
