Millions of mattresses are discarded in the UK each year, posing a significant environmental challenge. While skips are convenient for waste disposal, it’s crucial to understand if they can accommodate mattresses.

Why Check with Your Skip Hire Provider?

If you are looking to dispose of a mattress the team at David Brown Skip Hire can help. We will review the following and advise you on the best solution.
• Regulations: Some areas have specific regulations regarding mattress disposal in skips.
• Fees: All skip hire companies charge extra fees for mattress disposal due to specialised handling and recycling requirements.
Environmental Impact of Mattress Disposal
• Landfill Space: Mattresses occupy significant landfill space, contributing to environmental pollution.
• Slow Decomposition: Their complex composition (foam, springs, fabric) makes them decompose slowly in landfills.
• Recycling Challenges: Recycling mattress components, particularly metal springs, can be complex and costly.

Responsible Mattress Disposal

• Recycling: Utilise specialised mattress recycling facilities to separate and repurpose components.
• Donation: Donate usable mattresses to charities or organisations that provide assistance to those in need.
• Manufacturer Take-Back Programs: Explore manufacturer take-back programs for responsible disposal.

How to Dispose of a Mattress in a Skip

1. Prepare the Mattress: Strip bedding and ensure it’s clean.
2. Position Carefully: Place the mattress flat on the skip bottom, ensuring it fits within the skip’s boundaries.
3. Secure the Mattress: Prevent shifting by placing it securely within the skip.
4. Contact David Brown Skip Hire: Arrange for collection and proper disposal.
